Broken Easy Out Inside a Broken Bolt - Extraction - Part 2
This is the best and one of the only methods on how to properly remove a broken easy out that had been broken by attempting to remove a broken rusty bolt. In the previous video, as an example, Tom Grafton at Jerry's Broken Tap and Drill attempted to remove a very rusty seized bolt using an easy out. The demonstration showed that if a bolt breaks on the way out it generally means it's too seized for an easy out and will almost always break because the easy out is twice as brittle and half the size of the original bolt.
In this video Tom Grafton illustrates the correct professional method on how to remove a broken bolt or easy out utilizing a metal disintegrating machine (MDM). It's very co...

It generally too seized and must utilize a more professional method.
Broken Bolts - BWW Head Bolt Thread Repair

Drilling out a broken bolt can be more difficult than what many believe. Do it yourself methods or using bolt extraction tooling can many times lead to damaged threads, unnecessary work, and greatly increase cost of repair. Here we have a BMW cylinder head with multiple broken bolts and damaged threads caused someone who was not a broken bolt specialist. This person attempted to drill out multi...

The Toyota engineers that designed this engine should be ashamed of themselves, using aluminium instead of Detroit gold ( cast iron ) for an engine block . It would have been designed by people that have never owned a good old American V8

My first experience with Timesert was almost 40 yrs ago, repairing a Johnson 3.5HP outboard head with a cross-threaded plug. I was impressed with the process then, and can only imagine it's gotten even better since. Sure makes Heli-coil look silly.

If the steel bolts pulled the threads out, why wont the steel inserts pull out of the threads as well, under the same conditions? Wouldnt making new threads in the existing hole starting from the top of the block and using bigger bolts the size of the new threads the length of the threads on the bolts? The bolts have lots of unused threads that shouldve been used from the factory.

I can not understand why tapping are used for such expensive parts when thread milling removes the possibility of permanently damaging the thread. I think portable thread milling machines are not heard of.

We had a tap burner at the aerospace company I worked for and it was fine for some of the smaller hardware we produced, unfortunately most of what we made was mostly large turbofan parts that wouldn't fit on the burner. We just used carbide end mills to drill out the tap web and did it on the machining center and it worked just as well.

I have an aluminum head&block(let's be funny and call it military grade aluminum) Part of the bolt hole broke when I was trying to re thread it... can I use a helicoil?? Or do I need to pull this part off and have it welded then re-threaded. Or am I fuc#ed?

  • @symtex36

Hey. If it is crooked...can we just add some high temp gasket material along with the new valve cover gasket?

  • @identifiesas65.wheresmyche95

These ez outs are kind of dangerous and should be avoided at (almost) all cost, they can be good if something broke as you were installing it, especially if there was lubrication involved but bolts that are seized typically dont come out. The unfortunate (because of cost) best solution is to weld, if its seated deep you can use a copper insert tube down to the stuck fastener and then build up the weld from the fastener & up through the tube.

Hi Tom, thank you for the very informative video. I am in the process of doing timeserts on all of the head bolt holes. I have found on the rear bolt on the intake side there is a hole approx 1/2” in diameter facing toward the inside of the block right towards the cooling jacket however it is filled with water so it does not appear to be leaking. I found it when I put brake cleaner in the hole and the cleaner leaked out immediately from the bell housing area. Trying to figure if this is factory design? Tried find blueprints on the block with no luck. I was going to put JB Weld in it but was trying to find out if it supposed to be there? Can’t imagine why though. Any thoughts or help would be much appreciated. Thank you.
